Jeff held a protective arm around his mate as they walked toward the alpha. Every werewolf they passed was on edge, uncertain of the new person, the new scent, but Jeff wasn't going to let it faze him. Once they understood who Matthew was and why he'd left the pack when he did, Jeff was sure he'd be welcomed home with open arms.

"Alpha," Jeff called before the man could change into his wolf form and join the others on their run. "I want to introduce you to my mate." Noah grinned, just like Jeff knew he would. "This is Matthew Yates."

"It's good to meet you," Noah said, wisely foregoing his usual instincts to hug his packmates. Jeff's emotions were too raw, his possessiveness too new. He nodded his relief when Noah simply held his hand out to shake Matthew's in a human sort of way. "What pack do you come from?"

There was no censure, no suspicion, just genuine curiosity.

"I was born in Lupinville," Jeff answered nervously. "I…left when I realized I was…"

"It's okay, Matthew," Noah said, giving Jeff's mate a genuine smile, "being gay isn't a problem in this pack. Everyone who wants to live in peace is welcome in Lupinville." Noah winked then, showing Matthew that he wasn't a person to be feared. "Welcome home, Matthew."

"Thank you, alpha," Matthew said, clearly overwhelmed by such easy acceptance. "I promise I won't cause any problems."

"I have no doubts," Noah said easily as Liam, in wolf form, wandered back to find out what was keeping his mate. Liam wagged his tail like a domestic dog, playfully nipping at Noah's fingers until he glanced up at Matthew.

The wolf became a man so quickly even Jeff was impressed.

"Matthew?" Liam asked. The moment Matthew nodded, they were both engulfed in Liam's embrace. Considering how much smaller he was compared to Jeff it was quite a feat. "I'm so glad you found your way home."

Fortunately Liam stepped back into his own mate's embrace before Jeff's overprotective instincts could kick in. He glanced at Noah before asking Liam the obvious question. "You knew he was alive?" As far as Jeff understood, the whole pack had been told Matthew was dead.

"Yeah, I…um…" Liam shrugged and smiled. "I helped get him out of town sixty years ago." He gave Jeff a sad look. "If I'd known he was your mate, I would have told you beforehand and encouraged you to go with him."

Jeff swallowed hard at the thought of how many years they'd lost, but no one had known they were mates. It had been too dangerous to reveal it, so it wasn't reasonable to expect anything more than what Liam had done.

"Thank you for helping him when I had no way to do it myself."

"Anytime," Liam said with a wide grin. He winked, the confidence behind the gesture showing how well Liam had adapted to his life as the alpha's mate, and then he turned back into his wolf shape, barked once at his mate, and then bolted into the trees.
